Vocabulary

Is your child having difficulty reading? The first problem to address is vocabulary. Learning English vocabulary will improve your child’s performance on school quizzes and tests, on the SAT, and in college level reading courses

Is your child learning 10-20 vocabulary words a week? If not, she’s behind.

Here is a book that most of our tutors had read by sixth grade. See how many of the boldfaced words your child knows.

Mrs. Rachel Lynde lived just where the Avonlea main road dipped down into a little hollow, fringed with alders and ladies’ eardrops and traversed by a brook that had its source away back in the woods of the old Cuthbert place; it was reputed to be an intricate, headlong brook in its earlier course through those woods, with dark secrets of pool and cascade; but by the time it reached Lynde’s Hollow it was a quiet, well-conducted little stream, for not even a brook could run past Mrs. Rachel Lynde’s door without due regard for decency and decorum; it probably was conscious that Mrs. Rachel was sitting at her window, keeping a sharp eye on everything that passed, from brooks and children up, and that if she noticed anything odd or out of place she would never rest until she had ferreted out the whys and wherefores thereof.

The Improve Your English vocabulary program:

  • Each year, your child learns 500-1000 new vocab words.
  • All vocabulary words are personally selected for your child each week.
  • Your child receives weekly quizzes.
  • No multiple-guess tests! Students must memorize and recite definitions.

Reading

You see your child looking at a page—but how do you know he is reading?

Is he reading at the right level? Many schools give students books that are too easy.

At Improve Your English, we offer a rigorous reading comprehension program:

  • Challenging classic literature
  • Weekly comprehension assignments
  • A tutor who checks each week to make sure your child really understands the book

Grammar

Mystified by your teacher’s comments on your child’s essays? Wondering what those little red marks in the margins mean? Learning English grammar can clear up your confusion.

In addition, knowing grammar enables students to earn higher grades on essays.

Easy Grammar Test

Explain the meaning of the following terms:

  • Linking Verb
  • Direct Object
  • Comma Splice

Students who don’t know these terms are in danger of making major grammatical errors on their essays. All these topics and much more are covered in the first three months of our grammar program.

Remember: If an English tutor isn’t teaching grammar, your child’s writing will not improve. The tutor can revise papers for you, but your child will learn very little.

Writing

Want to learn how to write? Write more essays.

Unfortunately, most school teachers are responsible for 100-150 students. As a result, they can’t give many writing assignments. With such large classes, each assignment takes weeks to review and correct. By that time, the student has forgotten what he wrote and looks only at the final grade. Under these conditions, it is hard for kids to improve their writing.

At Improve Your English, your child will write an essay or a portion of an essay each week. That means that each week, she is thinking about arguments, crafting paragraphs, and editing sentences. And she will receive immediate, personal feedback from her tutor. We’re even available outside of lessons to help your child make edits on school assignments.

Our program helps students make rapid improvement in writing. And that makes a big difference when it comes time to write essays for honors classes, AP tests, or college applications.
